How to work out metal weight
Weight is volume times density. For a plate, multiply width, length and thickness to get the volume, then multiply by the metal's density.
Example: a 300 × 200 mm plate of 6 mm mild steel. 300 × 200 × 6 = 360,000 mm³, which is 360 cm³. At 7.85 g/cm³ that's 2,826 g, or 2.83 kg.
A shortcut for plate: the weight of one square metre in kilograms is the thickness in millimetres times the density. 10 mm mild steel is 10 × 7.85 = 78.5 kg per square metre.
Densities we use
These are the densities our quotes use to weigh every part.
| Metal | g/cm³ | kg/m³ |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminium 5005 | 2.7 | 2,700 |
| Aluminium 5083 | 2.66 | 2,660 |
| Aluminium 6061-T6 | 2.7 | 2,700 |
| Stainless 304 | 8 | 8,000 |
| Stainless 316 | 8 | 8,000 |
| Mild steel (Gr 250) | 7.85 | 7,850 |
| Brass | 8.5 | 8,500 |
| Copper | 8.96 | 8,960 |
The weight of a cut part
A cut part weighs less than the plate it comes from, because holes and cut-outs weigh nothing. Upload your drawing and the quote shows each part's weight, worked out from its actual outline.
Questions
How heavy is a 2400 × 1200 sheet of 3 mm aluminium?
About 23.3 kg in 5005 grade. That's 2.88 square metres at 8.1 kg per square metre.
How much does 10 mm steel plate weigh per square metre?
78.5 kg for mild steel. Stainless is about 80 kg and aluminium about 27 kg.
Is stainless steel heavier than mild steel?
A little. Stainless is about 8.0 g/cm³ and mild steel 7.85, so stainless is about 2% heavier. Aluminium is about a third the weight of steel.
Are these weights exact?
They're nominal. Real plate and bar vary a little in thickness within the mill's tolerance, so allow a few percent either way.
Does weight change the delivery price?
Yes. Delivery is priced at checkout by weight and address, with Australia Post. Parts over 1000 mm long, or orders over 22 kg, are too big for Australia Post, and checkout offers to quote freight for those.
